What is Stainless Steel Slip On Flanges?

Slip-on flanges, also known as SO flanges, are made to fit over the outside of the tubing, long-tangent elbows, reducers, and swages. The flange has a low shock and vibration tolerance. It’s easier to align than a weld neck flange. The strength of this flange under internal pressure is around one-third that of a weld neck flange, making it suitable for low-pressure applications. The face of this flange is lifted.

Why you Should use Stainless Steel Slip On Flanges

Some contractors prefer Slip On Flanges to Weld-neck Flanges because of the lower initial cost. However, the additional cost of the two fillet welds needed for proper installation can offset this. The slip-on flange has adequate strength for its rating, but its existence under fatigue conditions is only one-third that of the weld-neck flange.

The slip-on flange may be fitted to one or more ends of a pipe fitting or to the end of a piece of pipe. The inserted end of the pipe or fitting is set back or short of the flange face by the thickness of the pipe wall plus 1/8 of an inch on the slip-on flange. This allows for a fillet weld equal to the thickness of the pipe wall, within the SO flange without causing any damage to the pipe wall.
